5 Tips to Keep Clear Braces from Staining

Posted on: December 16, 2018

Clear braces are an excellent teeth straightening option. They give individuals who utilize them the ability to straighten their teeth without making it obvious to everyone that they are wearing braces.

However, there is a slight downside to clear braces, which is they typically stain easier than other forms of teeth straightening options.

How to keep clear braces from staining

If you currently wear clear braces, then you know exactly how difficult it is to keep your clear braces from getting stained. However, there is a way to keep your ceramic braces stain free and enjoy a beautiful smile while straightening your teeth at the same time. Here are the five most essential ways to keep your clear braces clean:

Brush your teeth frequently

First and foremost, it is essential to brush your teeth often when you have clear braces. While this is obviously true for any teeth straightening option and is even good practice without braces altogether, it is even more crucial to do so when wearing clear braces as the brackets have a higher chance of becoming stained.

Typically it is a good practice to brush your teeth after every meal. However, as long as you brush your teeth three to five times throughout each day, you should be able to avoid stained brackets.

Floss after each meal

It is true that flossing can be more difficult with braces. However, it is vital for individuals who wear clear braces to floss after each meal.

Otherwise, there is a high chance that food can get stuck in and around your braces and cause the clear braces to stain. However, flossing will help keep your mouth clean and prevent your clear braces from getting stained.

Avoid staining foods and drinks

Although flossing and brushing your teeth after each meal is a great way to prevent food and drinks from damaging the color of your ceramic braces, it is beneficial, if not necessary to limit your intake of sugary foods and beverages, such as cookies and soft drinks.

By carefully ensuring not to consume staining foods and drinks, you can ensure that your clear braces stay clear and won’t be as noticeable when in social situations.

Say no tobacco and alcohol

Cigarettes, chewing tobacco and alcohol can damage clear braces and significantly start to stain the brackets, which can leave individuals with clear braces with clear braces no more.

To avoid stained brackets, which ultimately does away with the sole reason to choose clear braces, be sure not to smoke and limit your alcohol intake.

Visit the dentist often

Lastly, be sure to visit the dentist often. Your dentist will be able to tell you if your clear braces are beginning to stain and what exactly you can do about it if they start to. If your clear braces are already stained, then your dentist may be able to replace the stained brackets for you.

The most important thing is that you communicate with your dental professional as they will guide you along the journey to straighter teeth.
