Six Month Smiles® is a great way to achieve a straighter smile in six months, which is the average treatment time for patients who choose this system. However, Six Month Smiles® may not be the best option for every patient, and understanding who makes an ideal candidate and the pros and cons of treatment can help you decide whether this is the teeth straightening treatment for you.
A review of Six Month Smiles® for orthodontic treatment
Many people have heard of clear aligners treatment and traditional braces but are less familiar with Six Month Smiles, which utilizes brackets and wires to specifically straighten the front teeth that are more visible. The following is a review of Six Month Smiles, including what it is, what issues it can address, and what to expect during treatment.
What is Six Month Smiles?
Six Month Smiles are orthodontic appliances that pull teeth into straight alignment. It works by placing tooth-colored brackets on the front six to eight teeth on the top and bottom row and placing a dental metal wire through each bracket before tightening it. The braces then pull teeth into a straighter position over time. The average length of treatment is only six months.
However, each patient receives their own unique treatment process and treatment times may vary based on how quickly the patient can achieve optimal results. During the treatment process, patients are required to take good care of their teeth by practicing good oral hygiene (brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash) and not eating foods that may damage the aligners. After treatment, patients are required to wear a retainer to prevent teeth from shifting.
What issues can Six Month Smiles fix?
Six Month Smiles offers an opportunity to achieve an attractive smile in only six months. Six Month Smiles can address a range of cosmetic issues with front teeth. Most notably, Six Month Smiles are often used to fix the following concerns:
- Crooked front teeth
- Overcrowded front teeth
- Gaps between front teeth
- Protruding teeth
The drawback to Six Month Smiles is that it does not address issues with molars and premolars. While this does allow for fixing misalignments faster, it does not address jaw misalignments as adequately as braces or clear aligners treatment.
When is Six Month Smiles not an option?
As discussed, Six Month Smiles is not an option if the alignment concerns extend to teeth farther back in the mouth. Patients who are looking for full realignment of all teeth inside the mouth may benefit more from traditional braces or clear aligners. However, for patients who want a short treatment time and only need adjustment to front teeth that are more visible, Six Month Smiles are a great option.
